Hi Nature lovers, this is my first post, hopefully first of many.
I believe this spectacular fly is a Golden Drone fly, Eristalinus punctulatus.

Thanks, Jackie. Hoverflies! I've never come across these before. No wonder when they took to the air they looked like a squadron of tiny helicopters.

Although the half a creature on the left hand edge of the photo is a european honey bee, the rest of them are hover flies, probably Melangyna sp. They seem to really like yellow flowers, and exotics such as this brassica are about the only ones on offer at the moment. We've been mostly seeing them on fireweed at our place.
