Thank you Graham -haven’t located the nest but good to know this is a native species as there is an increasing presence in the region of the Asian Paper wasp.
Polistes species are commonly known as paper nest wasps because they make their nests from grey wood fibre mixed with saliva. The diet is primarily lepidopteran larvae and small spiders which is carried back to the nest and 'carved up' for feeding to the queen and larvae. P. humilis appears to be a common pollinator becaus eof its abundance, but credible scientific studies are needed to confirm the species pollination efficiency.
Another Asian Paper Wasp - thanks for reporting this pest Jackie. Unfortunate to see that they've invaded Bermagui! Here's some more info on this invasive species and our local attempts to control their spread: https://atlasoflife.org.au/news-events/2019/4/14/wasp-alert
Those links are really cool, thank you! I have had another look at the nest and I think the way the wasps have built it , kind of wedged up under the window sill, makes it look kind of like a ball of playdo squashed under the sill. I'm guessing the anchor stalk is hidden from view and the shape is like the second link image. Thanks again for your information.
