Hi Ross - nice sighting! I have never seen this species in this region. Your photo is a good match, however, to shots I took on the north coast of NSW and that I identified quite confidently as Orthetrum sabina.

I have noticed bird species in this area which, according to my old books, aren't this far south. Climate change seems a possible cause of the spread of species. Unfortunately, this probably means range reduction for other species but that's only a guess.

Hi Ross - yes, expansion and contraction of species' ranges is of grave concern. One of the benefits of the growth in citizen science projects (such as this one!) is that we are all made more aware of biodiversity and changes in distributions. And, hopefully, ameliorative action is not too late. Cheers again.
