Good sighting. My copy of Cogger's reptile guide (1992) shows the distribution extending from Perth north round the coast but south only to about Sydney, but then goes on to say one of only 3 sea snake species recorded from Tasmania - rarely, I assume. Notes say it is pelagic (free swimming in the ocean) feeding mainly on surface fishes.
