This is NOT fungal at all. It is the nitrogen fixing part of the cycads which are so common in our local forests. Jackie can probably give you a better explanation about their function and importance in the environment.
Yep, definitely a burrawang as it is the only cycad on the south coast. Just done the reading myself and can't believe I have never seen this phenomenon before. I'll have to do a bit of litter scuffling next time I'm walking through a burrawang stand.
