Southward range extension of a rarely recorded nocturnal species.
User's notes
It was about 15 cm long and thin. It had two yellow stripes down the side of its head getting closer together towards the back of its head but not touching. It was dark grey almost black and its scales had a rainbow sheen in the sunlight. Underneath it was tan and looked stripey as each scale across its belly was darker on the edges.
Hi Narelle, The pale stripe across the snout and down the neck seems distinctive for this species. The average adult length is about 45cm so your specimen would be young at 15cm. My ID reference: "A Field Guide to Reptiles of New South Wales" (Swan Sadlier and Shea) third edition Page 248.
Hi Narelle, Max and I have never seen it either, and one of our books says they are nocturnal which would reduce the odds of finding one further. The books suggest your find is a range extension. The most southerly dot on the map in Swan et al is about half way between Jervis Bay and Batemans Bay. How did you run across it? Jackie
Hi Jackie, I was just going out the back door of a friends rustic cabin at night, and i thought I saw something fall by the door. At first I thought it was a shoe lace but it still made me jump being snake shape. It was quite dark. On closer inspection we saw it was a snake. We caught it in a jar to take away from the cabin next morning, It was very lively.
OK, so it was active at night, as advertised. On your location, the little snake symbol on the map looks to be out in the national park. Did you get it wrong, or move it a bit east in order to get into the ALCW catchment?
Yeah, the little snake symbol is not quite in the right spot.. I dont know how to move it. It should be downsteam, beside the Wadbilliga River, about half way between Yowrie and Belowra. About 7 km downstream from Wadbilliga farm.
Hi Narelle, It's easy enough to change your sighting location on the map. Go to the top right of this page where you'll see three grey symbols. The leftmost symbol looks like a pencil on paper; That's the edit button. If you left click on this symbol the page will reload itself and allow you to change your data. (Change notes, add and subtract photos etc). You can now go back on the map and find your correct sighting spot, then left click on that and the snake symbol will move to that spot. Once you've got things right, you just click on the "Update this sighting" button at the bottom of the page.
Hi Narelle, I've moved your Golden-crowned Snake sighting as per your instructions. Let me know if it needs further adjustment. I've given it a significant sighting tag for the considerable southern range extension. Cheers, Max
