User's notes

Growing abundantly on bare coastal rock. Definitely an organic growth rather than staining on the rock.

I'm not sure from the image, however is the lichen the sandstoney or black, or combination of both coloured texture on the rock?

It's all the black essexite(?). No sandstone.

Essexite a geological term describing a granular igneous rock typically containing labradorite and nepheline?!! Are you saying it looks like essexite? I don't know it if it's a lichen or is it maybe just staining or a bacterial growth. Unfortunately on my computer I'm unable to see really fine detail. I can ask around and see if I can come up with an answer for you.........

May be just staining!?

Good, now I see what you mean by the mustard yellowish growth - not the black I'd been looking at. Yes, I'd agree with you that it appears to be some species of lichen. I'll try and track it down for you. Nothing like a challenge!!! It may take me a while, so please be patient. Can you give me any idea of it's size please - not the whole thing but those small sections that make up the whole?
