User's notes

Magpie? Two babies discovered on the ground after the wind storm. The nest they appear to have come from is very high, at the top of a very tall straight spotted gum, too high to photograph but there are more babies in the best. Spread out like this the chicks were about 18cm long, the torso was about 5cm wide and about 5cm high as well.

Magpie seems like the obvious conclusion, given their size and those robust legs and beak. But I don't know enough about the appearance of magpie chicks to confirm it.

Well, not if there was a big wind event. Nests are probably more abundant in suburbia (especially when it is close to bush like at Mystery Bay) than out in the bush because we lay on all sorts of extra resources. Actually the timing in October might suggest magpie too, as they do tend to get on with breeding fairly early in the season, often carrying nesting material around in August at our place, possibly even earlier on the coast.

it was during a really high wind event. This one was beneath very tall spotted gums on the edge of the bush, a friend living on bushy acreage had the thing the same week, near Bega
