The background is a termite mound, what gives?

It's not uncommon for ants to live in termite mounds - particularly Camponotus species. They often prey on termites, but they can also take advantage of the mound and the associated rotting wood as a nest site. Camponotus are 'carpenter ants' ... that is, they can dig into softened or rotting timber, hollowing out galleries for a nest.
