The oval scars suggest this species. These are very old plants, the tallest I have seen in the region.

Thanks for the advice! The oval scars looked similar but not quite identical to image in Kevin Mills’ Rainforests of the Illawarra District. How tall do they typically get? I could return to try to measure.

Height up to around 10 m or so.

I toyed with the idea of Cyathea leichhardtiana because the trunk is so slender, but my tree ferns book does not mention oval leaf base scars for that species, so I think it has to be cooperi.

Thanks very much Jackie - is there anything that I should try to photograph more clearly next time on the ferns in order to more easily ID?

Photos of fronds is the most useful, both upper side and with fertile fronds the lower side of the frond to show spore bearing areas.
