Yikes, this is a poser - bloody waders! I think you are right about the beak being too short for a Sharpie. I've consulted several field guides and am torn between Red-necked Stint (was it tiny?), Sanderling (which is rare and supposed to forage on sand, but does have the white face and a lot of dark breast markings) and Red Knot, although we have some photos of the latter and its beak also looks longer than your thing. Want to have another go at the books with those choices in mind and see if you can get any closer? Or we can wait and see if Leo weighs in.
Thanks Harvey. For some reason I missed the plover page in my searches. The long legs and brownish rather than grey coloration certainly fit that species best, as well as the well defined dark cap/white eyebrow and the white forehead. Well spotted.
