This species belongs to the genus Popplepsalta. No species of Popplepsalta have been recorded in this part of New South Wales apart from P. rubristrigata and P. aeroides, and the specimen in the photograph is neither of those species. It might be Popplepsalta notialis, and if so the record would be a southern extension of range.

Hi Ipopple, that is interesting. Did you discover and name this species ? Is this the little one some people call Ruby Eye ?

Hi narelle. Yes I did name the species that it might be (originally called Pauropsalta notialis). I haven't heard the name Ruby Eye before, but that name could potentially apply to many species in the genus that also have red eyes. Notably, there are quite a few other cicadas that have red eyes too.

It would be great to get confirmation of the suggested identity of this species as Popplepsalta notialis, given that this sighting would represent a southern extension of its range. The images on this sighting do show a striking resemblance to images of P. notialis on ALA.
