Thanks, Ryu. This bird had me stumped.

Looks like a juvenile grey fantail, but why is it albiscapa (Tasmanian race according to Pizzey and Knight) and not fuliginosa (general name for all grey fantail races)?

Who's responsible for the ALCW taxonomy? This can easily be modified under admin. The are 2 different scientific names entered for Great Egret as well, which ought to be merged

Sounds like something to be brought up at the moderators' meeting. It's an on-going problem I guess when taxonomists keep fiddling with the names and some changes get accepted (by some people) and some not. All very confusing.

It seems the general name now is albiscapa. I have in the meantime merged Ardea modesta (Eastern Great Egret) which some still recognise as a subspecies into Ardea alba (Great Egret).

Hi Ryu, want to tackle cattle egret too while you are at it? That's the only other thing I've noticed that is in under two names, though many are there with unfamiliar scientific names and maybe should have their old name added as a synonym if it isn't already. Not so crucial for birds as for plants I guess since most people only worry about the common name anyway.

It doesn't seem like there are 2 cattle egret entries...

Yeah, there are: Ardea ibis and Bubulcus ibis. My books all say Ardea, but that may be out of date.

I thought it was ardea too but seems bubulcus is more recent. Have merged and added ardea ibis as a synonym

Checked on the web re the scientific name of grey fantail. Apparently fuliginosa is now the NZ species and the eastern Aust taxon is albiscapa. I can see my field guides need a few marginal notes to update the names.
