This juvenile was about 40cm in length.

Congratulatiosn Ross, this is a lot more interesting than a red-bellied black. I imagine they are not uncommon (I've seen one twice), but not often seen. My copy of Cogger says they are nocturnal but sometimes active during the day in deeply shaded areas or in the late afternoon, usually found in dry sclero forest and montane heath.

I thought the colouring was a little different but thought it might have been because it was a juvenile red.The photo was taken at about 14:00 and it seemed to be basking in the low sunlight along the headland track. It must have been an unusual specimen.
