Didn't find an image seeming to match this insect on the site. There were a few flying around the sandhill areas of North Long Beach. wasp?

Yes, it's a wasp. In Sept last year, I got a single photo of one that looked very like yours. Haven't managed to identify it beyond family at this stage. Kim or Max might have an idea.
