Hi Charles - do you think this might be Simosyrphus grandicornis? The 'face' looks pale, and there looks like there might be a yellow stripe along the dorsolateral of the thorax. Check out these couple of links, and see what you think. Perhaps you have another photo of this lovely fly, after it had landed ...?

Yes, I just had a look at the high res pic of it and unfortunately only 3 pics in flight, but I do agree with your ID Simiosyrphus grandiscornis as it looks very close when you match up a few pics of this species, they are never easy.
