Hi Rose, I can just about make out that there is a whale out there in the distance, and the most likely species is humpback, but the photo isn't good enough to be able to confirm the sighting, sorry. They need to be doing something a bit more active, like sticking head, flipper or tail out of the water for a definite ID.

Hi,
Yes unfortunately my photo is pretty poor; it would be good if the NatureMapr app would allow me to upload photos from my camera roll but it only accepts ones taken within the app due to not having the gps in camera mode - as far as I can see there is nowhere in Settings for me to turn on a gps mode. It limits the photos.
I was informed at the time that it’s a Southern right. She had a calf and hung about in the area for a long time. There are excellent photos on Facebook which my daughter showed me - I don’t have FB.
Any advise on accessing camera roll and selecting from Photos would be great, I have an iPhone 7plus.

Kind regards

Rose

Hi Rose,
Yeah, I have seen a right whale just hanging around off the beach like that once too, barely sticking enough head up occasionally to be identifiable. If others have confirmed that particular animal as that I guess I can do so here. I'll pass your query about the app on. Personally I'm a camera and computer user, and I know nothing about the app.

Rose. My comments here about iPhone settings are based on my iPhone 6s, so I am hoping they will be same for your newer phone.
To turn on GPS for your camera, go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services. Make sure this is ON (ie green) and then scroll down to find the various apps which may make use of the gps (ie location service). For Camera, make sure it is set to 'While Using'. Also for NatureMapr and Photos set to 'While Using'.
At the top of the phone screen, click back to < Privacy. Click on Photos - make sure NatureMapr is set to Read and Write.
If you previously did not have Location services switched on for your phone Camera, any old photos will not have stored gps information (so not usable by NatureMapr app), but future photos will be OK. If you did previously have Location services switched on for your phone Camera, old photos will now be accessible by NatureMapr app.
Finally, if you want to use old iPhone photos with no gps information, you can still upload them to NatureMapr, by this method: Upload iPhone photos to your computer, logon to NatureMapr website > Add a sighting, add your photo(s), manually indicate the location on the map (and also specify date & time, if that information has not been supplied by the photo automatically), complete the required information about abundance and species and the click the Report this sighting button at the bottom.
