Hi Marg. This is a nymph of a katydid. It’s difficult to tell the species because the nymph can be very different in appearance to the adult. I suspect it’s the Speckled Katydid (Diastella latifolia), based on the overall body and leg shape, the presence of spines on the femora and the ear on the first tibia. But as I couldn’t find any images of the nymph of this species, I’m just placing it in the subfamily Phaneropterinae (Bush Katydids).

Thanks, Paul. Is it likely to be responsible for damage to leaves and buds on the Gum?

It’s possible, Marg. All bush katydids are supposed to be herbivorous, according to David Rentz’s CSIRO guidebook.
