It was late in the day and these little fellas were really quick, will try to capture again under better conditions. Approx 1.5cm long, very active late afternoon, sunny conditions, tended to jump away if it felt threatened.
Pretty sure these are the same as the ants Max photographed between Bournda and Tura, which were also very active and hard to get an in focus shot of. Yours is better. Those big spines on the armour-plated looking thorax are distinctive, as well as the hairy golden abdomen. I'd love to know what function the spines serve - quite a few of the larger ants seem to have them.
Thanks Jackie! It was such an interesting little critter, took me ages to get a half decent shot of it haha I've loved ants since I was a little tacker, used to watch their ant-ics for ages, day dreaming about what they might be doing or thinking ;-) I have some great footage of various ants, but am on my L plates with Adobe Premiere, hopeful to add some active ants some time in the near future!
