There were many of these catapiller type creatures along the wall and in the shrubs outside the Salvation Army Store in Bega. They ranged in length between 10 cm and about 20cm.

Case moth cocoons is the best that I can do. The shrubs are Grevilleas if that helps moth folk to get a bit closer to an ID.

Hi Steff. I think this may be Metura elongata. They're large caterpillars, they cover their silken case with short twigs, and they feed on a wide range plants. Here's a link with more info ... see what you think. In particular, see if you can get a glimpse of them when they're dragging their case along. You may see the striking orange and black patterns

Hi Kerry. Thanks for the info! I did see one moving along a branch, it's head was orange with black behind it but I wasn't able to get a photo.
