Wow! What an incredible image, it looks like something that's dropped in from outer space! It appears as though that top section may be a polypore. Though those long elements hanging down I suspect belong in some way to the tree behind and not to the fungus (if indeed it is a fungus). Did you notice what type of tree it was? May be a Casuarina/Allocasuarina??

Thanks Pam, l wasn’t sure what l was looking at when l found this one, there were no others around and these threads that you can see on the fungi weren’t anywhere else on the tree, only where the fungi was growing. l think the tree could be a Casuarina as there are plenty of them in our area.

Thank you, l really enjoy close up, macro and micro photography. Fungi fascinate me as do all insects and bugs. I’m out everyday looking for things to photograph, and it’s always wonderful when l discover and photograph a bug or fungi in our area that I’ve never seen before.

Pam l went walking in the reserve looking for this fungi with my husband to see if the long spaghetti like tails were growing from it or from the tree and we both can confirm that these tails are definitely growing from the top and sides of the fungi. If you or anyone in our area would like to see this to confirm what we saw today, I’m more than willing to take you to the location of this growth.
