User's notes

This probably started out as a nest built by our sow, but something interesting has made it their home. Am wondering if it could be a Poteroo, bandicoot, other native mammal or rattus rattus. No sign of any scat. Any help appreciated.

Hi Lisa, No idea what it might be. Potoroo and bandicoot are very unlikely where you are - too far from forest (although that said, someone nearby did get a quoll in their chookshed a few years back, so nothing's impossible). You used to be able to borrow infra-red cameras from the Conservation Management Network. You could set one of those up next to it to record nocturnal activity (might have to move the pigs temporarily though). Ringing the Local Land Services office would be a starting point for the cameras. Jackie

Thanks Jackie. That’s a very good idea! I’ll let you know what we discover, if anything at all.

If you manage to borrow a camera and get some photos you can put them up here. Depending on what they are, they might be identifiable, at least to genus if not species. One rat probably looks much like another in the dark!
