User's notes

This appeared as an oval shaped ball of sand. It broke open when I bumped it and the brown insect was inside it. The sand ball was about 3cm long and 1.5cm wide. The insect was about 2cm long. Can anyone identify?

wow ... the insect is actually a pupa. My first thought is Lepidoptera (moth or butterfly). I don't suppose you collected it did you? If so, it might eclose (ie 'hatch') and we would know for certain.

Yes I would say Lepidoptera, and a moth rather than butterfly.

Thank you both for your information. No, I didn't collect it, I have to admit I didn't want to touch it because I didn't know what it was and didn't know if it might bite or defend itself in some way.
