User's notes

Is it perhaps Caledonia? I have many of these in my garden. I don’t recall seeing this native pictured at the orchid presentation at yesterday’s bio blitz.

Hi, I think this is Dendrobium kingianum (or Thelychiton kingianus if you keep up with recent name changes), pink rock orchid. It isn't a local native (Queensland to Hunter Valley is its range) so isn't really appropriate to put up as a sighting. The website is supposed to be for naturally occurring plants and animals, not garden plants (unless they have got out and become established in the bush).

Interesting. It was a gift (20 years ago) and the gifter told me they occurred under and around hero house opposite Pambula golf course. I’ll check with her as to origin.

My gifter told me she has seen them in the wild on rocks near Brogo dam!

I'm pretty sure the ones on the rocks near Brogo Dam would be the rock orchid, Dendrobium speciosum, which is a much larger critter with cream flowers. It is very common locally, though accessible ones sometimes get collected by people, and are hammered by wallabies and feral goats, who find the foliage very tasty. I've seen a spot at Brogo where goats had been clambering down a steep rock face to get at them.
