I'm getting a vague impression of papery bark, and if that's right, then you are probably correct and it is a Melaleuca, probably quinquenervia, and not a local native. But your photos are nowhere near good enough to be sure of this. You need to take a close-up of the bark, with a sprig of leaves and some of the woody fruits if you can find any.
