Might this be Nemalion helminthoides ('Sea Noodle')? Some strands were very long ... perhaps a metre or more (although we didn't measure them). They were attached to the substrate at the base, and formed tangles where they were washed together by the waves. They were growing just below tidal zone on and around rock platforms.
