Further to my recent posts and pursuing my theory that most of the large ponds on the Anabranch contain platypus, this morning I re-walked the pond behind the Treatment Works (doing the full length this time) and walked the pond behind the Hospital. As a result I have upped my estimate of the platypus numbers in the treatment pond from 4 to possibly 6, and I saw at least 1 possibly 2 in the Hospital pond (as per photos with this post). Along with the two platypus seen some time back in the next major pond upstream this makes a population of at least 9 in three ponds. The only pond where I have not seen any is the Bridge pond under Tarraganda Lane which may be due to its modest size and traffic noise. Sightings this morning of Whistling Kite, Red-bellied Black Snake and Long-necked Turtles will be posted separately.
Nice work, great to hear there's a healthy platypus population in the Anabranch! Keep your eye out for any sign of Carp in those lagoons as they have been confirmed in the lagoon just to the north of Bega Cheese recently (LLS are currently planning a control program). Also, if you get the chance to have a look for platypus in the lagoons north of Bega Cheese please do so as that data will be important in terms of control measures available for the carp control.
