A pair of butterflies courting in the garden around midday.

Yes, I agree that this appears to be a pair, with the female to the left and the male to the right in the first photo and the female above and the male below in the second. It does look like courtship is underway. Apparently, the male flies from behind and under the female repeatedly, displaying his upperside colours. Alternatively he may hover above a flying or perched female. Your photos seem to show the latter form of courtship. Nice observations!
