I've suggested Phellodon niger, which is a fungus that has a fertile surface comprised of fine teeth that are usually a pale grey-lilac colour when fresh. The white edge is usually another distinquishing feature. Were you able to take any images of the undersurface, or remember what it looked like as this would help confirm the identification.

Sorry Pam, unfortunately no. I will certainly take photos of the underside now but the recent photos I have posted were taken a while ago.
