Hi Jackie, This is a tricky one. The white underside means it can't be any of the east coast shearwaters I think, but the bill looks too long for things like petrels which can have a white underside. It looks like it was quite a small bird. It would be good when you find beach washed birds to pull the wings out and take a photo of the upper and underwing, to compare with the photos of the birds in flight in the field guides. All scrunched up on the ground isn't so easy. You could knock a bit of the sand off for a better look at the face too - just a suggestion for next time. There are a lot of awfully similar looking seabirds out there!
