Giant Black Wasp?

Hi Jackie. I thought that was the actual name of the wasp but I have just checked and found it was actually called Great Black Wasp. This is not to say that what I photographed was the Great Black Wasp. I saw a number of these insects today. Nearly all of them were around the 1 -1.5 inch mark. Sorry for any confusion.

OK, it does look very like Kerri-Lee's photos from Wonboyn of Prionyx sp (35mm long in her sighting), and looks to be hunting in sandy ground similarly to her sighting. But I'll leave the confirmation to someone better qualified.

I don't know what characters (features) of Prionyx distinguish it from Sphex, so I'll hold off on this one.
