This is a male, somewhat worse for wear. The female of this species is larger and more colourful. When you have a recently dead specimen like this to work with, you can arrange the wings to show both fore wing and hind wing patterns and turn the insect over to show under wing patterns with a second photograph. In some species under wing patterns can be very useful in identification.
