User's notes

I found these on the high tide line today. I'm guessing they are seeds of some sort. They are brown and hard. They feel solid and heavy. They have been in the sea for a while judging by the encrusted growth on them. Any information would be appreciated.

I'm not positive of this, but they look like the reproductive bits of the Black Mangrove, Brugiera gymnorhiza, which grows up the coast of Australia from NSW north coast northwards and across to WA. The theory is that these cylindrical objects develop on the plant after the flower is fertilised, then drop down and bury their tip in the mud to take root there. If washed away, they probably have a harder job of it to get established. There's probably a technical term for this but my book doesn't divulge what it is. I don't think you'd call them a seed exactly.
