User's notes

Darker form of button beetle (paropsisterna or dicranosterna) like that of an earlier post (4257741). Bad photo, I'm sorry. Can't get them to stay still.

You could chuck them in the fridge for a little while to make them more cooperative! Then get them from a few angles.

Good idea. I'll give it a shot with the next one I find.

Found what I think is this beetle on the ALA: https://bie.ala.org.au/species/urn:lsid:biodiversity.org.au:afd.taxon:1fe08a27-87a2-48b1-8582-6662e64681a0.

Certainly looks pretty good, although the 8 markings are not so obvious on your animal. I think that was the most similar thing on CNM. But I'd like to have Kim check it.

Thanks Jackie. I've added another pic that may help.

Yes I think this is Paropsisterna octosignata. The second image seems to show a tinge of red on the sides of the pronotum, which is not typical of that species, as stated at https://sites.google.com/site/paropsisternablackpages/paropsisterna-octosignata. However that same website shows a Victorian individual that does have a red-margined pronotum.

OK, thanks Kim. I've added the species to our list and confirmed it, and put this image up in the field guide pages.
