This was an interesting find. The cluster of caps were emerging from under the thick leaf litter, pushing it up as there grew. There was a fine wispy white substance growing among them - I am not sure if this is a second species, or part of the original...
I agree most unusual. My feeling is that it is a group of either Cortinarius or more likely Hebeloma that are being infected by a parasitic Hypomyces sp.. Some of the Hebeloma are known to grow from dead animals. Need to think on this one.
