Not surprised you were puzzled. I'm pretty sure it is a very unhappy specimen of Brittlewood that has come up in the wrong place and is struggling, therefore yellow and sick looking. It is very variable in leaf texture (glossy to hairy) and shape (pointy-tipped to blunt), but I was able to find one photo of it in our collection that matches yours, except for not being yellow.
Oh good. Thanks Jackie. Your comment about rainforest edges is interesting, as we do have a few other plants that seem to be consistent with that — climbers and figs — scattered through the forest.
