There were easily around 60 or more of these bees on one flower. Then I discovered every yellow or yellow-gold flower had bees as well, so there would have been well over a hundred altogether.

Although the half a creature on the left hand edge of the photo is a european honey bee, the rest of them are hover flies, probably Melangyna sp. They seem to really like yellow flowers, and exotics such as this brassica are about the only ones on offer at the moment. We've been mostly seeing them on fireweed at our place.

Thanks, Jackie. Hoverflies! I've never come across these before. No wonder when they took to the air they looked like a squadron of tiny helicopters.
