Definitely wasn’t common, when it flushed off the road displayed quite rufous feathers, the lighting at the time wasn’t great though

We saw a few others that morning, but couldn’t manage photos, I’ll try find one that shows the colours better

OK, had another look and the wing pattern does seem to match brush better. The light is not really good enough to be sure of the facial markings. Even for a female there should be a bit of chestnut on the throat and I can't see that, but I have to concede the breast looks dark, so brush it is.
