May be a silly question, but was this alive, or could it have been a moult (empty shell)?

If the latter, I'd say a sun-bleached Leptograpsis variegatus like your other pic.

If alive, don't know this one.

Definitely alive. Kids were playing with it and finding it a nice "home". It was pretending it was somewhere else and was doing its best to hide. It was about 2cm from side to side when tucked up like that.

The above is not Helograpsus haswellianus note the features do not match.

namely the carapace lacks the anterolateral tooth, the frontal region is not rounded downwards, the walking legs are much broader than those of H. haswellianus.

Based on location and visual features the above is Cyclograpsus audouinii

C audouinii has hairs at the base of the walking legs. Are these visible?

C. audouinii is the only species in this genus in NSW C. granulosus does not extend into NSW
