I think this was a juvenile, the mother was also higher up in the tree. I could hear at least one other bird in neighboring trees.

They don't seem to like you to get too close, it's hard to get photos. I was really too far away to get decent photos with my little camera. The young one was making a high pitch squeal while it was munching on the cones. Its parents were just making an intermittent low pitch kind of growl as they were feasting. I took a little video as well and you can hear the noises they were making, they are quite distinctive.

the squeal noise is very similar to a frog I get over at the coast - that's how I find the birds in summer.
