@natureguy @MichaelMulvaney @Tapirlord this is an unusual sighting. Normally with an out of range Eucalypt like this Tallowwood, it would easy to say it was planted. But this tree is massive, 9.5m circumference. So it must have been planted in the 1800s. Graziers arrived in Bemboka in the 1870s. So it is possible that someone planted it not long after, but odd given they would have been busy clearing the forest for grazing, not planting Eucalypts.

To be honest it is pretty big to be just 150 years old, very interesting sighting. There must be some story behind this tree!

@plants what do you think? It is in the parkland next to the Bemboka Police Station. There is steep roadside cutting so easy to go straight past without realising the large size.

It is way out of range nd an individual only presumably.
I would check the history of the Bemboka Police Statiion site - did a constable come from the north coast early on?

@plants that would make sense if they arrived early in the towns history.

I have been searching TROVE for photos of Bemboka from the early 1900s to see if the Tallowwood is featured. No luck with photos of that part of town. The Bega Historical Society may have some photos or letters. The mystery continues...
