Seemed to be different from other animals in ponds. Smaller. Different colour configurations.

Hi @JimL , this sighting and your other recent one (Gerridae (family) (Water strider)) appear to be water striders! They are water bugs — a type of insect, rather than a species of spider — so I am putting the Gerridae (family) suggestion forward for the insect moderator team to identify further :). Many water spiders are much larger than these guys, as well as having 8 legs!!
The Canberra and Southern Tableland regions have many reference records you could look through if you're interested:
Pisauridae sp. (family)
