So - this solves a puzzle. In 2022, the hollow had been selected by a pair of glossy black cockatoos for nesting (sighting 4435728). Given the behaviour of the female, I believe there was a nestling in the nest. However, the adult female mysteriously disappeared. For months afterwards, the male would cry mournfully as he flew in to roost, and roost close to the nest tree. Heart breaking, and I believe he is still around, alone. We had organised for the hollow to be measured this morning, for research purposes. However, as we looked up, one of the climbers noticed a lace monitor sunning itself on the sloped trunk, before clawing its way back into the hollow (I assume now its home), then peering down at us. I suspect this is why the female glossy black cockatoo and her nestling disappeared - a winter lunch for the monitor. :( :(
Really sad - they already have so much to contend with (much like gang gangs). I now think of the monitors in the same predator category as brush tail possums, but with scales! Already difficult for the glossies, with so much clearing of both allocasuarins and hollow bearing trees. This hollow was quite high up, but the tree was on a bit of a lean - perfect ladder for a monitor, helping defeat gravity!
