Intellagama lesueurii (Australian Water Dragon)

The Australian Water Dragon (Intellagama lesueurii) is Australia's largest dragon lizard. There are two recognised subspecies that are distinct in colouration and pattern but almost identical in scalation, so if their skin is dirty or stained (as is sometimes the case) or if you're unsure what subspecies it is, then choose this option, i.e Intellagama lesueurii.

Good ways to identify Intellagama lesueurii, even when the colours and patterns are obscured or when the animal is young, are transverse rows of enlarged scales across the back and limbs, an enlarged nuchal and vertebral crest that continues onto the tail becoming two low ridges in the distal portion and a vertically compressed tail.

Intellagama lesueurii is listed in the following regions:

Canberra & Southern Tablelands  |  Southern Highlands  |  South Coast  |  New South Wales North Coast  |  Greater Brisbane  |  Wide Bay  |  North Queensland
