Damn, and here I was getting all excited about finding something new. The interior was very smooth, like nothing had been inside and normally our Earth Star puffballs flatten right out. I think this was why I thought it a fungi cup.
Looks like a remnant of Laetiporus portentosus that has been lightly singed by fire?! The old remnants of this fungus, which usually grow a moderate distance up tree trunks, look like old styrofoam due to them being a great food source for insects. You don't by any chance remember any of the nearby tree species?
