Possibly a Yellow-shouldered Hover Fly, Ischiodon scutellaris. It was on the same dandelion as a smaller species of hover fly.

Hi Kerry - this appears to be Sphaerophoria macrogaster - the '3 full + 2 partial' yellow stripes on the long abdomen are a good match for the records in ALA. Cheers.
