Hi Deb, Sambar are very common in the southern part of the shire. Red deer are also possible (released off deer farms when the venison biz went bust) but they have higher antlers. In sambar the rear pair of tines are about the same height as the front ones, which is just apparent in your photo.

Hi again, I went off a bit half-cocked on the sambar distinguishing features, just going on a single illustration in my field guide. The rear tines of the antlers can stick up well above the front ones in sambar too, but their antlers are less branched than those of red deer, with a maximum of 3 tines per antler.

Thanks Jackie ... since we moved here in November 2016 many of our neighbours tell us how many deer there are around here ... this one was a little further afield, and with a reasonable sized group of friends that ran into the forest.
