I think this might be a hawk moth caterpillar, genus Psilogramma. It may be Psilogramma casuarinae. If so, it's a 'first' for our database! Here's a link to images from Canberra ... does it look a match to you?

I looked on the link you suggested and I think you’re right - Maybe an Australiasian Privet Hawk Moth?
