Firstly to clarify that this is not Amanita punctata (now known as Amanita cheelii). Features of that species that are not evident in this current species; edge, margin of gills (lamellae) are distictly grey, no annulus and large saccate cup (volva). Secondly I can't be 100% certain of this species - sorry. Did you notice if at the base of the stipe if there was any kind of cup like structure? The structure of the base of the stipe in Amanita is often very significant in being able to identify them to species. Good images of a nice group of mycorrhizal fungi. Did you notice what trees were growing nearby that they may have been associated with?

I tried to remove more of the stem sprouting out of the sand, but only got an incomplete portion. It was just as in photo showing the gills. This fungus was very close to the forest which in that spot has Cassurinas, gum trees and Banksia. The soil is really just sand. The sea is less than 1km away.
Thank you for all your comments! I love taking photos of fungus and have, rather unsuccessfully, tried to identify them from my book or internet. It is great to have expert help! I also hope that it is helping in the maping of fungus in Australia.
