Hi Rob, That pattern of yellow patches on the abdomen fits a Hover Fly, not any of the local bees, which tend to have yellow/pale bands running right across, not broken in the middle like this. They do spend a lot of time visiting flowers.

Rats, I could have sworn I could tell Melangyna and Simosyrphus apart by now, but it seems not!

Jackie, I hesitated with this one, but the (barely visible) yellow stripe on the side of the thorax and bright yellow face convince me it is Simosyrphus. The yellow dorsal spots on the abdomen are usually more extensive in Simosyrphus, but that is hard to see in this shot.
